How We Work With Families
Fundamental to Spruce’s work with families is the belief that family understanding and support of the treatment plan greatly enhances the recovery of their son or daughter. While balancing our residents' rights to confidentiality, Spruce acknowledges that the family has often been the "primary care giver" and shares the mutual goal of their loved ones independence. We recognize that in most instances, the family has been disrupted by our client's emotional challenges. We believe an educational and collaborative approach is the most effective way to help our families establish healthy, adult relationships.
Family Coaching:
We offer five private telephone sessions to identified parents with our Parent Coach, Lynn Rockwell, MEd. Lynn is a highly skilled clinician with many years of experience working with young adults and their parents. (See Lynn's Bio). Lynn will arrange these sessions at your convenience. Some of the topics she may discuss with you include:
- How to best support your son/daughter in treatment at Spruce
- How to restore trust between parents and 'child.'
- Roles of various family members in the family
- Styles of communication in the family
- "Letting Go," supporting individuation
Conference Calls:
Generally on a weekly basis, you will be participating in a conference call with your son/daughter and their Case Manager. The purposes of these calls include: receiving an update about how things are going at Spruce, explaining the Spruce process, and assistance with establishing and maintaining adult, healthy communication.
Family Meetings:
We will typically meet with parents upon admission for a program orientation and discussion. We also ask that a detailed family questionnaire be completed prior to admission so we can learn about the parents' experience with their loved one and his/her challenges. Later on-site family meetings with treatment team members may be arranged as needed.
