Spruce was founded in 1982 by Candace Beardsley, LICSW, in response to a perceived gap in services available to young adults struggling with mental health issues. Since its inception, Spruce Mountain Inn has provided the opportunity for personal growth and increased independence to hundreds of young men and women. Spruce has continually offered a strong vocational/educational program, individualized treatment plans, and case management services. Under the direction of Candace and Assistant Director Grant Leibersberger MBA, MEd, Spruce today boasts a continually innovative program with a national reputation for quality.

Located in scenic Plainfield, Vermont, ten minutes from the State Capitol of Montpelier, we take pride in offering the kind of balanced program that takes into account the individual’s need for a supportive community of peers, comprehensive treatment and skill development to achieve a more satisfying and independent lifestyle.

The overall goals of the program are these:

  • personal growth and increased satisfaction with living
  • developing a healthy lifestyle
  • successfully managing increased independence
  • making a greater contribution to society
