HISTORY &
PHILOSOPHY

Since its inception, Spruce Mountain Inn has provided the opportunity for personal growth and increased independence to hundreds of young men and women. The Inn was founded in 1982 by Candace Beardsley, LICSW, in response to a perceived gap in services available to young adults struggling with serious mental health. Since its beginning, Spruce Mountain Inn has offered a structured vocational/educational program, individualized treatment plans and case management services. Under the continued direction of Beardsley and Assistant Director Ed Levin, LICSW, the Inn today boasts a strong and continually innovative program. Here the emphasis is on learning practical skills coupled with ongoing and appropriate on-site therapeutic services in a supportive, nurturing environment.

Located in scenic Plainfield, Vermont, the Inn and its staff take pride in offering the kind of balanced program that takes into account the individuals need for contact with others, support, assistance, therapy and skill development to achieve a more satisfying and independent lifestyle.

The overall goals of the program are these:

  • personal growth and satisfaction with living
  • functioning with increased levels of independence
  • making a greater contribution to society

"I want to thank all of you, the staff, for your enduring support and gentle guidance, for helping me through, knowing when to step in to aid me and when to allow me to stumble on my own. You have all helped me through so much in so many ways. It would not be exaggerating to say that I owe to you not only my recovery, but my very life itself. My gratitude exceeds my capacity to verbalize."
